Drake is too smart

The ice is still safe where I fish, but I’m so sick of winter I don’t even want to go if the fish are biting.  I want to cast a flyrod!  Dang it!

Before we leave ice fishing, I thought I’d lay this on ya.  Drake and I were out in front of the house fishing one day on glare ice.  I’m talking about the kind that’s so shiny and slick it you’re sure you’re going to face plant.  Makes your butt pucker just stepping on it.

Anyway, we’re out on it fishing when we hear this black lab on shore barking it’s head off, and heading our way.  I could see from where we were that he was a trouble maker.  You know the type, hair up along his back, tail up high wagging slowly, teeth bared, all that crap.  Here he comes out on the ice.  Right toward Drake.

Well, I was about 40 ft. away and couldn’t get to Drake in time to do whatever, and had to just watch from there.  Didn’t matter, because what played out in front of me was priceless.

Drake just stood there looking at this raging idiot dog coming at him at full speed across the glare ice, teeth showing, barking his butt off.  “What are you doing just standing there Drake?”, I thought.  Twenty feet, ten feet, five feet… then something remarkable happened.  Drake simply stepped aside a couple of feet, and the Lab shot by him like a rocket.  Well, the Lab would have none of that, thought Drake was just lucky, did a giant U turn slipping on the ice the whole way, and lined Drake up again.  “You’ve got to be kidding.”, I said, and watched in utter disbelief as my dog made a total fool out of the Lab by stepping out of the way at the last second again!

Well, this happened two or three times more before the Lab gave up, realized he just got his rear end effortlessly handed to him, tucked his tail between his legs, and walked off the ice.  I laughed until my face hurt.

Drake just watched him walk away, then turned his attention to playing around with my ice scooper.  Oh well, just another day.
