Circle Hook Data - Winter 2007
We’re very excited to report that many of our clients used circle hooks with live or dead bait through the ice this winter for a variety of fish. We believe this to be the first data collection effort on the use of circle hooks for ice fishing! Reports back showed an astounding 0 (zero) throat hooks from 135 fish across 6 species caught on circle hooks. As much as we are tempted to alter the data fearing criticism from skeptics, we have to report it as it is.
We expected good results, but did not expect this type of effectiveness. Most notably, was the Northern Pike catch; 40 caught, again, 0 (zero) hooked in the throat. Tradition has most anglers using treble hooks for Northern Pike, often they are swallowed, resulting in a dead fish. The circle hook holds great promise here, and will drastically reduce winter kill of these great predators.
